Article III.  Congregation

 

A.    Membership

Any person may offer himself/herself as a candidate for membership in this church, after having shared their salvation experience and baptism with the pastor or one of the elders.

 If accepted, candidate shall be presented to this church at any regular worship    service for membership in any of the following ways:

  1. By profession of faith and for baptism according to God’s Word and the policies of this church.
  2. By a statement of prior conversion and baptism in a church of like faith and order.
  3. By promise of letter from another Baptist church of like faith and order.
  4. By restoration to full membership after having been removed from the inactive list. Persons desiring restoration shall present himself/herself at any regular worship service and will be subject to the procedures stated above.

 

Should there be any dissent as to any candidate, such dissent shall be referred to the pastor, and elders for investigation and the making of a recommendation to this church within thirty (30) days.  A three-fourths (3/4) vote of a quorum shall be required to elect such candidate into membership.

New Member Orientation

New members of this church are encouraged to participate in the church’s new member orientation program, conducted by the pastor as needed. 

Membership Status

 

ACTIVE MEMBER

  1. Any person who has joined this church in a manner as prescribed above in Article III, A and has been received into membership by this church.
  2. Any member who is not attending because of mitigating circumstances (health, college student, military, snowbirds is still deemed to be an active member.

 

INACTIVE MEMBER

             Inactive membership in this church shall be given if:

  1. Any member for a period not to exceed three (3) months has not attended, contributed financially, or communicated with the church (must be all three).
  2. Any member who has joined this church and requests to be placed on the inactive roll.

Article IV

  1. Any member who has moved out of the community but has not requested a letter of transfer to some other church.
  2. Any member who is attending another church in Edmonton but has not asked for their letter of transfer.

 

            A record of all active and inactive members shall be kept in the church office and shall be updated on a regular basis.  An updated list shall be published at the beginning of each church year and at other times as needed.  Members will be given notice one week prior to action by email as well as a letter will be mailed through Canada Post stating the intended action, signed by pastor and/or an elder.

Rights of Members

  1. Every active member of the church age 18 and above is entitled to vote at all elections and on all questions submitted to this church by the conference.
  2. Every active member of the church age 18 and above is eligible for consideration by the membership as candidates for elective offices of this church.

Termination of Membership

Reasons for termination shall be:

  1. Death of the member
  2. Transfer to another Baptist Church
  3. Exclusion by action of this church
  4. Erasure upon request or proof of membership in a church of another denomination.
  5. At request of member for name to be removed.
  6. Has not attended, contributed financially and or given any valid reason (must be all three) for a period of six (6) months since last attending. Exception is physically and/or mentally not able to make decisions.

 

Member will be given notice one week prior to action by email, also a letter will be mailed through Canada Post stating intended action, signed by pastor and/or an  elder.

 

Article IV

Discipline

  1. It shall be the practice of this church to emphasize to its members that every reasonable measure will be taken to assist any troubled member. The pastor, other members of this church staff, and elders are available for counsel and guidance.  The attitude of members toward one another shall be guided by a concern for redemption rather than punishment. 

 

  1. Should some serious condition exist which would cause a member to become a liability to the general welfare of this church, the pastor and elders will make every reasonable measure to resolve the problem in accord with Matthew 18. If it becomes necessary for this church to take action to exclude a member, a three-fourths (3/4) vote of the members present is required and this church may proceed to declare the person to be no longer in the membership of the church.  All such proceedings shall be pervaded by a spirit of Christian kindness and forbearance.

 

            This church may restore to membership any person previously excluded, upon request of the excluded person and by vote of this church upon evidence of the excluded person’s repentance and reformation.

 

 

 

 

This rewrite of the membership section of the by-laws of Castledowns Baptist Church should go into effect retroactively to Jan 1, 2020 upon approval of the church.
